sustainable conservation
Hereditarius is a not for profit organisation founded for the research, preservation and re-use of at risk heritage.
As Kroeber and Kluckhohn suggested in 1952 (Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions) we might define culture in many different ways. Yet what definitions of culture have over the passage of time been deemed worthy of survival by incorporation into our collective concept of heritage has never been fully established.
Instead heritage is often understood only as material culture, the artifacts that are found in museums, and structural ruins. Yet increasingly it is also being understood as non-material culture that can include folklore, oral traditions and skills.
Examples of heritage accepted by Hereditarius are tangible heritage including buildings and objects, and intangible heritage including, though not restricted to, customs, traditions, artistic or aesthetic expression, belief, language and identity. Overall, any heritage must provide a system for understanding our history.
research, preserve and re-use
How heritage is defined varies by context, and each case requires an independent assessment for how important its cultural contribution was and is. Hereditarius can make this judgment and where appropriate will act to protect marginalized or threatened heritage.
We can undertake casework to protect buildings at risk from demolition, and we can campaign to protect a range of other heritage. Our specialist staff can provide a range of advice many aspects of the conservation or archaeological and historic structures and materials. We can also provide a range of training and resources to help people working in the heritage sector. To find out about our specific services go here.
