how we work

Hereditarius is a not for profit organization. Most of our staff, many of whom are acknowledged experts in their respective fields, are volunteers.

Advice

Hereditarius is able to advise on a wide variety of issues. In particular we can provide advice on the issues, technologies and fabrics used in building conservation and restoration. We can also provide specialist advice for a range of archaeological and historical research programmes from across the heritage spectrum.

Casework

Hereditarius often takes on an informal role in the planning system by acting to oppose the demolition of historically important buildings at public enquiry, or by acting to get at risk properties listed or protected before demolition becomes an issue.

Campaigning

In addition to casework, Hereditarius is also active is developing means to protect vulnerable and marginalized heritage, whether tangible, for example at risk fabric and non-extant structures, or intangible such as collective knowledge and oral traditions.

Training and Experience

Hereditarius offers a range of practical experience from across the heritage sector. Although we offer no formal qualification, we do offer short and long term placements within ongoing programmes of excavation, archaeological and architectural survey, conservation and many related disciplines. All positions incorporated free training and a letter of recognition for each programme completed. Further information is available here.

Publication

It is a central aim of Hereditarius to publish our findings as rapidly as possible. Although much data is release through our forums and e-archives, we also produce hardcopy publications that give research results and practical advice on a range of heritage issues. Many of our publications are available through the Hereditarius shop. A regular newsletter detailing all of our current activity is also available here.

Events and Activites

Hereditarius run a range of events and activities for its members, from lectures to site visits. Membership is free. To find out more please visit the member section.

It has its own membership, job, project and information sections, and a dedicated information hub, forum and image archive.
